Alessandro was internationally recognized for his important contributions to applied mathematics and scientific computing, particularly the mathematical and numerical modeling of cardiovascular systems. Since joining Emory University in 2007, Alessandro built a distinctive interdisciplinary research program bringing together mathematics, computation, engineering, and medicine. His vision was to make quantitative and computational methods an integral part of clinical medicine, particularly in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Alessandro's scholarly accomplishments were remarkable. He authored more than 150 articles, delivered more than 100 invited presentations at conferences, workshops, and universities around the world, and received research support from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Coulter Foundation, Georgia Research Alliance, and industry. He was also a co-founder of two Emory-based start-ups and a co-inventor on several patents related to the diagnosis and treatment of coronary disease. Just as important was Alessandro's extraordinary commitment to students and young researchers. Over the course of his career, he mentored students at every level, including 19 undergraduates, 41 master's students, 22 Ph.D. students, and 10 postdoctoral researchers, as well as high school students. He gave generously of his time, energy, ideas, and enthusiasm and was deeply invested in the success of those he mentored. Alessandro was an outstanding scholar, an inspiring teacher and mentor, a generous colleague, and a passionate advocate for the ability of computational and applied mathematics to make a meaningful difference in the world. His energy, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to his students, colleagues, and collaborators touched an extraordinary number of people. We have lost a remarkable colleague and a dear friend. These demand large, detailed models that break kinematic similarity of the flow, so practice falls back on simplified product tests. PTS reconciles the competing scaling requirements by partitioning the turbulence spectrum. The project validates the method and supplies guidance for applying it. Experiments are at the University of Florida NHERI boundary layer wind tunnel, combining surface-pressure and point-velocity measurements with planar time-resolved stereo PIV. The facility is highly automated and the UF team leads the campaign, so the doctoral work is analysis led. We seek a strong foundation in applied fluid mechanics and an interest in turbulence and separated flow, with scientific computing in Python or MATLAB applied to large time-resolved datasets.
