Accordingly, user navigation has become an important issue. Navigational problems are often acute for novice users, as well as remaining a concern for experienced users. This paper reviews relevant research in the areas of information exploration, structuring, and visualization. The paper also considers related research in the physical world from the social sciences and urban design. Although much research has been completed in these areas, user navigation in electronic worlds is a relatively new topic. Further research is required, particularly for the design of appropriate tools and environments.
