The purpose of the Bio-Matrix Project is to support efforts to integrate databases, knowledge bases, information retrieval, and related techniques for biological information handling. Biological systems are very complex, and whereas physicists can resort to first principles to derive most of their fundamental theorems, biologists will not be able to do so for the forseeable future. The substitute for biologists is reasoning-by- analogy, and for this to function properly they must have access to information in fields they may not even know exist. Information retrieval and knowledge bases are a source of potential analogs, but the tools to integrate them must be developed. The server contains three areas: I. matrix -- The Matrix of Biological Knowledge archives, subscriber lists, past discussions, and the Listing of Molecular Biology Databases (LiMB) II. molevol -- Molecular Evolution mail list archives _________________________ The information in this section is provided in accor- dance with the copyright notice appearing at the front of this guide.
