---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPARCserver 2 SunFLASH Vol 23 #9 November 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPARCserver 2, the High-Performance Entry-Level Workgroup Server PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS ------------------ Sun's new SPARCserver 2 delivers excellent performance and greater expandability for low-cost workgroup computing. The SPARCserver 2 offers fast application throughput and large disk capacities required for file, database and multi-user environments. SPARCserver 2 Overview ---------------------- Sun's new SPARCserver 2 replaces the SPARCserver 1+ as Sun's highest performance, most expandable entry-level workgroup server. File Server: The SPARCserver 2 has much higher I/O throughput and greater disk capacity than the SPARCserver 1+, enabling the SPARCserver 2 to support much larger workgroups of NFS clients. Database Server: The SPARCserver 2 is an excellent database server for small- and medium-sized workgroups. It offers the best database price/performance in the industry (51.9 tpsB, and $3,700 per tpsB - TPC-B Benchmark).* Multiuser/Terminal Server: SPARCserver 2 is well suited for commercial application multi-user environment, especially as a front-end database server. It can support up to 18 direct terminal connections with the Serial/Parallel Controller cards or can support dozens of network connected terminals. * TPC-B is the industry's most stringent database benchmark FEATURES BENEFITS -------- -------- 40 MHz SPARC CPU delivering Fast database transaction and 51.9 tpsB and 21.0 SPECmarks compute performance 2 SBus expansion slots for Greater I/O throughput and higher disk high-performance, low-cost capacitites with SBus SCSI Host Adapter cards SBus cards Cost effective and powerful multi-user system with SBus Serial/Parallel Controller cards High performance, low-cost gateway server with SBus Ethernet controller cards Up to 96-Mbytes of memory Capacity to run large applications locally and multiple applications simultaneously Up to 7.6-Gbytes of disk Flexibility to expand disk capacities as capacity user needs grow. 2.3-Gbyte tape and CD-ROM High-capacity tape drive for large, standard unattended backups and low-cost CD-ROM for software distribution SunOS 4.1.1 Provides significant performance gains, especially in I/O and database performance Desktop Server Option Packs --------------------------- The way desktop servers are ordered has changed. There is no longer a specific server package on the price list. Instead Sun offers Server Option Packs, which are ordered with any desktop workstation. These Option Packs include the peripherals needed to configure a fully functional server from any desktop workstation. There are three Server Option Packs targeted to meet the needs of file, database, and print server environments. - File Server Option Pack: 669-Mbyte disk, 2.3-Gbyte 8mm tape, and SunCD CD-ROM - Database Server Option Pack: 16-Mbytes of additional memory, 3 x 669-Mbyte disks, 2.3-Gbyte 8mm tape, SCSI Host Adapter for SBus, and SunCD CD-ROM - Print Server Option Pack: SPARCprinter, NeWSprint software and SBus Printer card. There are several benefits to configuring servers using the server option packs. 1. The server option packs provide the flexibility to configure any desktop system as a server. Now, the SPARCstation SLC, the SPARCstation IPC and the SPARCstation 2 can be configured as servers. This provides a range of price/performance points to suit the customer's needs. 2. Sun can offer attractive discounts on the bundled peripherals needed to create a fully-functional file, database or print server configurations. 3. The server option packs make it easy to order and easy to understand for customers. 4. Server option packs are designed to meet the needs of specific server applications. They include the typical peripheral configurations required for file, database, and print server applications. Sun's SPARCserver Family Positioning ------------------------------------ Sun's SPARCserver family now consists of six different platforms that offer different levels of price, performance and expandability. SPARCserver SLC and Lowest cost servers for small workgroups SPARCserver IPC and PC's (using PC-NFS) SPARCserver 2 Best price/performance for small- to medium-sized workgroups SPARCserver 330 General purpose server for customers that need a low-cost VME system SPARCserver 470 and Performance and expandability for large SPARCserver 490 workgroups and departments The SPARCserver SLC and the SPARCserver IPC address the needs of price sensitive customers for small workgroup file servers. The SPARCserver 2 offers the best price/performance for small- and medium-sized workgroups. It offers the flexibility to expand the system with optional SCSI host adapters, serial/parallel ports, or additional Ethernet controllers. The SPARCserver 470 and the SPARCserver 490 are designed to meet the performance requirements of large departments. These systems can support large numbers of simultaneous file or database clients. The SPARCserver 470/490 offer much higher memory and disk capacity, much better connectivity and an upgrade path to future multi-processor systems. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ------------------------------------ Platform Support: ---------------- File Server Option Pack is supported on: SPARCstation SLC SPARCstation IPC M/FC/GX SPARCstation 1+ SPARCstation 2 M/GX Database Server Option Pack is supported on: SPARCstation 2 M/GX only Print Server Option Pack is supported on: SPARCstation IPC M/FC SPARCstation 1+ SPARCstation 2 M/GX SunOS Information: ----------------- The SPARCstation packages with internal disks are delivered with SunOS 4.1.1 client operating system kernel only. Pre-loaded operating system is not adequate for server configurations. Customers need to order a full-install SunOS 4.1.1 media and documentation with the File and Database Server Option Packs.
