Welcome To TELECOM Digest! -------------------------- As you requested in recent correspondence, your name has been added to the mailing list of TELECOM Digest. Beginning with the next issue, you will receieve each issue as it is published direct in your mailbox. Typically, the Digest is published three or four times per week. Since we publish based on the volume of mail we receive, which varies from day to day, you may get an issue each day for two or three days, then none for a couple of days, etc. TELECOM Digest was founded in June, 1981 by Jonathan A. Solomon, as an outgrowth of HUMAN-NETS. The Digest was founded as a place for more technical discussions of telephony, modems and data communications not suitable for the general HUMAN-NETS readership. JSol, as he is known by many netters, was responsible for the Digest from the beginning until October, 1988, when I assumed the responsibility for editing and distributing this journal. In addition to distribution via the mailing list, of which you are now a member, TELECOM Digest is distributed through several expansion lists which are maintained locally. Digest messages are also reformatted in single message style by chip@vector and distributed by him on Usenet's comp.dcom.telecom newsgroup. In all, several thousand readers see the messages posted by our contributors. The [Telecom Digest] Archives provide a lot of interesting material, and you are invited to use them at any time. You *must* have an Internet account and ftp privileges to use the archives. From your system, 'ftp lcs.mit.edu'. When connected, logon as anonymous, enter a password, and begin your session. You would enter the command cd /telecom-archives, then ls -l to view what is available. The past few months or so of Digests will be in the file 'telecom-recent'. Older issues are in the files named 'YEAR.vol.issxx-yy' which appear at the top of the directory. Other miscellaneous articles are named appropriatly. Sorry, but due to time limitations, I cannot fulfill back copy requests myself, with the exception of the dozen or so most recent issues, in the event of a failure by the mailer causing you to miss an issue. If you cannot arrange the ftp yourself, get someone to assist you. OUR ADDRESSES: telecom@eecs.nwu.edu (items for publication) telecom@bu-cs.bu.edu (alternate for above) telecom-request@eecs.nwu.edu (address changes, maintainence) ptownson@eecs.nwu.edu (personal mail to me) There is little more I can say about TELECOM Digest, except that I hope you will enjoy reading each issue as much as I enjoy bringing it to you. I hope you will participate in the dialogue between readers. Patrick Townson TELECOM Digest Moderator NOTE: THIS WAS USED FROM 10-88 TO 12-89. THE GATEWAY WAS CHANGED TO EECS.NWU.EDU IN 11-89 AND THE ARCHIVES RELOCATED TO MIT IN 1-90. THE MOST RECENT VERSION OF THIS LETTER INCLUDES THOSE CHANGES.
