TWX Last Updated: July 1985 Last Reviewed: February 1986 2 pages Access to Autonet Via the TWX Network The TWX network is a U.S. domestic terminal network that operates at the rate of 10 characters per second and supports normal ASCII, interactive terminals. The TWX network is interconnected to the domestic and international Telex network to provide the Telex/TWX user maximum flexibility. However, the present inter- connection method between the Telex and TWX networks allows only for store and forward message transmission, not interactive ter- minal communications. In addition, because Telex operates at 6 characters per second and supports the Baudot character set, Telex/TWX users face certain limitations. Domestic TWX Access Procedures (User entries are shown in quotation marks.) 1. Turn the terminal power switch on. 2. Call the Autonet station number: 810-223-2402 3. When a connection has been established, TWX will respond with: ADP Cypher ARB 4. At this point, press the RETURN key twice. 5. The network will respond by printing the Autonet connection banner: Autonet Line xxxxxxxxxx Command: 6. Type the appropriate Autonet connection dialog command, and proceed with the usual host log-on procedures. 7. When the terminal session is completed, log off the host as usual. 8. Autonet will respond with the CALL CLEARED 9. Simply switch off the terminal. The cost for domestic TWX transmissions varies with the distance from Ann Arbor, Michigan. -Continued on following page- 1 International Telex/TWX Access Procedures (User entries are shown in quotations.) 1. Dial one of the toll-free numbers for the international record carrier (IRC) that services the particular country of interest. The carriers available for most countries are: French Telegraph Cable Co. (FTC) ITT World Communications, Inc. (ITT) RCA Global Communications, Inc. (RCA) TRT Telecommunications Corp. (TRT) Western Union International, Inc./MCI (WUI/MCI) 2. Once you have made a connection to the carrier of choice, you will receive a signal (answerback) from the carrier, and the carrier will receive a signal (answerback) from you. This requires no action on your part; the signal is generated automatically. 3. After the answerback exchange, type the international area code for the United States (this will depend on the carrier you use), the Autonet station number, 810-223-2402, and a plus sign (+). Do not send any other character. 4. When the connection between the IRC and the Autonet station is complete, the TWX network will respond with: ADP Cypher ARB NOTE: Do not press the 'HERE IS' key as the TWX user's manual states. 5. At this point, press the RETURN key twice. 6. The network will respond by printing the Autonet connection dialog banner: Autonet Line xxxxxxxxxx Command: 7. If you experience any data transmission problems, use a different carrier and repeat the above procedure. International Telex service is available throughout the world. The cost of an international call to the U.S. varies depending on the originating country. 2
