Queries are established with the QUERY command documented below. What follows is a short description of all Pasadena commands in alphabetical order. We recommend that you print this message on paper for handy access to the QUERY and other commands. Please remember that upper and lower case are considered the same by Pasadena, i.e. "INCLUDE" is the same as "include." Commands: CHECK GROUPS Verifies that the list of newsgroups for your query is consistent. CHECK GROUPS should be used to bring the list of newsgroups for a query up to date, when newsgroup changes were not added (perhaps because you did not send back an update form, or because you were away for a while). Example: USE FastCars CHECK groups DELETE item Removes the specified item from the current profile section. Valid item names are variable names and the special names INCLUDE and EXCLUDE. Example: use delete vacation EXCLUDE [query] With this command you add a filtering stage to your query which discards all postings which match the rules you specify. Rules are in the form of regular expressions. The command is terminated by the word END on a line by itself. Example: USE SuperComputer EXCLUDE From: .*wyle@inf.ethz.ch.* END Further documentation can be obtained with HELP EXCLUDE. FEEDBACK id This precedes a feedback form. You should never have to type this command as Pasadena always prefixes empty feedback forms with it. GET item Sends you a message which contains the specified item of your current query. Valid items are QUERY (the query text), GROUPS (the list of known news groups), EXCLUDE and INCLUDE (for the respective filter specification). Example: use fusion get groups get query GROUPS [query] This command is generated automatically when Pasadena replies to a GET GROUPS command. You should never have to type this command manually. HELP [topic] This is the command you are most likely already familiar with. In its simplest form it sends you this list of commands again. If you specify a topic, it will try to obtain more detailed information. See HELP TOPICS for a complete list of topics. Example: help topics INCLUDE [query] This command is the opposite of EXCLUDE, which allows the installation of search patterns. The include mechanism supersedes all choices based on the information retrieval algorithms, and the articles retrieved will therefore not appear on evaluation forms. Only those articles which would ordinarily not be sent through the information retrieval mechanism are examined. The command is terminated by the word END on a line by itself. Example: use NewLit INCLUDE From: .*Susanne Humphrey*. Subject: .*tech reports available*. END QUERY name This command precedes the actual text part of a query. You must give each query a name, to identify it in future commands. The text that follows the QUERY command will be used by the information retrieval algorithms for comparisons with news articles as they arrive. Upon receipt of a valid query command, Pasadena will start sending you articles. If you accidentally create a new query, you can easily delete it with the REMOVE command. Your query text should end with the word END on a line by itself. The query name may contain only letters and digits and must not be longer than twenty characters. Example: query fishing i'm interested in reading about earthworms' experiences with fishing. end REGISTER Does a first-time registration. You should probably never need to use this command again. It is included here as a reference. REMOVE query Removes a query from the profile. WARNING: the effect of this command is irreversible. Example: Remove matchbox-cars SET variable = value This sets the profile-variable to the given value. Examples: set experiment-size=10 specifies that 10 articles should be sent each time this query is processed. Set Experiment-Freq = 3 would tell Pasadena to process this query once every three days. SHOW [query] The SHOW command, with no query name specified, returns a view of your entire profile. If a query name is specified, only the variables of that specific query are returned. This command does not return all newsgroups searched for a query. To view this information, use the GET GROUPS command. The output of this command is a series of syntactically correct Pasadena server commands that would re-create the profile in its current form. In other words, if you were to send the output of the SHOW command back to Pasadena, your profile would be re-established, and have the exact same values it had when the SHOW command was processed. Thus it is possible to make changes easily and send everything back without worrying about details of the command language. Example: show SIGNOFF Cancels your registration and you won't receive any further mail from Pasadena. WARNING: the effect of this command is irreversible. Example: Signoff USE [query] Specifies which query to use for succeeding SET, DELETE, GROUPS, GET, CHECK, INCLUDE and EXCLUDE commands. If you omit the query name, the global section of your profile is selected. Example: USE HAL9000 SET Experiment-Freq = 2 Some of the forms you will receive may have commands attached to them. Please do not remove these commands - they are required to facilitate automatic processing of those forms when you send them back. As mentioned at the beginning, you can now establish a query. Here is an example: QUERY SuperComputers Cray XMP YMP MIPS Dhrystones Wheatstones parallel high-speed END USE SuperComputers GET GROUPS set header-fields="from,subject,summary,newsgroups" SHOW SuperComputers The last part of the message above is an important refinement step. The header-fields variable is set to limit the news article header fields in each item sent. The GET GROUPS command is used to examine and then change which newsgroups are examined for this query. Finally, the SHOW command is used to verify the settings of the query. Good luck with you first query ! Virtually yours, the Pasadena server
