This directory contains sample bitmap images which demonstrate the use
of layout independent fisheye views (of nested graphs) to visualize large
hypertext documents.

The bitmaps show several visualizations of the Canada-US Free-Trade Agreement.

nested.gif	- nested graph visualization of the hypertext document with
		  link inheritance to reduce the number of visible links

zoom.gif	- a "zoomed view" showing a portion of the above
		  visualization (node "16 Investment) -- notice that
		  global context is sacrificed for local detail (one cannot
		  tell how this view is related to the original view)

distort.gif	- graphical fisheye views use geometric distortion to
		  scale a drawing at multiple levels and and in doing so balance
		  local detail and global context; however, distorted
		  views tend to be difficult to understand (esp. of nested
		  graphs) because a) this technique uses geometric notions of
		  distance (which is not appropriate for hypertext networks),
		  and b) geometric distortion alters the shapes of nodes
		  too much (which is bad for nested nodes).  The bitmap image
		  distort.gif shows a distorted fisheye view centered on
		  node "16 Investment"

fev1.gif	- a layout independent fisheye view of the nested graph
		  with focal point "16 Investment"; notice that the
		  rest of the graph structure has not been distorted as in
		  the graphical fisheye view -- all nodes representing
		  document parts and chapters are clearly visible as are the
		  relationships between the focal region and other parts of
		  the graph
